"Hills Like White Elephants"

Ernest Hemingway's "Hills Like White Elephants" was a confuseing story. In the story there was always a comparison of the hills and white elephants. I didn't understand what this comparison had to do with the girl and the guy's situation. The girl and the guy was waiting in the bar for the train to come and take them to the next town. I believe that the girl was going to another town to have some kind of operation. Her boyfriend kept trying to explain to her that the operation is very simple and there is nothing to be afraid of. He offered to stay with her all night just so she can feel comfortale. He also told her that if she didn't want to do it, she doesn't have to and that he would love her just the same. This story sounds like a man, who is truly in love with this women to the point that he is willing to do anything in order for her to be happy. But yet again, i still don't understand what does this have to do with the hills looking like white elephants????
